Ireland's greatest protection from a no-deal Brexit will be our continued membership of the European Union, the Seanad debate on emergency legislation has heard.

European Affairs Minister Helen McEntee said the situation in London has served to reinforce Ireland's commitment to the EU.

"Our membership of the EU is our greatest protection not just from Brexit, but from many of the challenges that we face today," she said.

She said Irish people understood the EU was built on values that "can never be taken for granted and values that are ever more important in our turbulent world".

"I belong to a generation that has always had the privilege of two identities: Irish and European. Like our values, it is a privilege we cannot take for granted," Ms McEntee added.
