Firms operating in the accounting, financial services and pharma sectors are reducing their hiring efforts amid concerns about Brexit, according to the latest IrishJobs.ie index.

In the three months to June 30, total job postings on the site decreased by 4pc year-on-year across all industries.

The reductions were driven by firms in the banking, financial services and insurance sector, where vacancies fell 15pc compared to the previous year.

In the science, pharma and food industries, openings declined 1pc year-on-year.

Other factors affecting hiring included sluggish European markets, according to the site.

"As the countdown to the UK's EU withdrawal edges closer, many Irish businesses are bracing for a bumpy ride, one that could last well into next year," said Jane Lorigan, of IrishJobs.ie.

The news was not all bad, with vacancies in the construction, engineering and utilities sector up 7pc, reflecting the demand for residential and commercial property.
