Brexit is the 'stupidest thing any country has ever done' except Trump election - former Mayor of New York
Michael Bloomberg, the former Mayor of New York, has described the UK’s decision to leave the European Union as the "stupidest thing any country has ever done" except elect Donald Trump as US president.
Mr Bloomberg, who’s net worth is estimated at over $50bn, is alleged to have told a tech conference in Boston two weeks ago that he may not necessarily have opened a new European headquarters in London for his media corporation had he known that the UK would vote for Brexit, according to reports in the Guardian.
"My former wife was a Brit, my daughters have British passports, so we love England – it’s the father of our country, I suppose.
"But what they are doing is not good and there is no easy way to get out of it because if they don’t pay a penalty, everyone else would drop out. So they can’t get as good of a deal as they had before," Mr Bloomberg said according to the newspaper.
He went to to say that he thought it was the "single stupidest thing any country has ever done but then we Trumped it," according to the Guardian.
Bloomberg employs around 20,000 staff worldwide, approximately 4,000 of which are based in the UK.
Mr Bloomberg served as Mayor of New York between 2002 and 2013.
