Border checks are "unavoidable" if the UK leaves the single market and customs union, the EU's chief Brexit negotiator has said.

Michel Barnier was speaking at a press conference in Brussels today.

"It is important to tell the truth. A UK decision to leave the single market and leave the customs union would make border checks unavoidable," Mr Barnier said.

Mr Barnier said the UK has committed to proposing specific solutions to the "unique circumstances" on the island.

"We are waiting for such solutions," Mr Barnier said.
