Billionaire Paul Coulson is taking over direct management of the Ardagh Group, following the surprise departure of CEO Ian Curley after just over a year in the job.

In a statement, Ardagh Group said that former Smurfit executive Ian Curley had informed the board that he is resigning to pursue other business opportunities and will leave the group at the end of the year.

Paul Coulson, currently executive chairman, will become chairman and chief executive. Ian Curly succeeded Niall Wall at Ardagh last year, before that he had been chief financial officer of Jefferson Smurfit later Smurfit Kappa.

The Ardagh board thanked Ian for his contribution and support during his time with the business, in a statement released today.

The group also announced the appointment of Johan Gorter as chief executive of its global glass business.
