Lidl and Aldi both performed strongly in the latest survey from Kantar Worlpanel, with the German retailers now having a combined 17pc share of the Irish grocery market. Aldi has an 8.6pc share, while Lidl has 8.4pc.
They have continued to expand their footprints across the country, while other chains have slowed their openings. As that landgrab continues, and as more people chose to shop with them, their market share is almost certain to increase. Grocery inflation has edged up, hitting 0.6pc compared to 0.2pc previously.
