A potholer has died stuck upside down in a US cave despite desperate attempts to rescue him.

John Jones became trapped about 700 feet into the cave in Utah known as Nutty Putty.

Police said rescuers were able to reach Mr Jones but he was wedged too tightly to pull him out.

Mr Jones began having trouble maintaining consciousness and breathing, but the cause of death will not be known until his body is removed.

He became trapped in a hole about 18 inches wide and 10 inches high with his head below his feet on Tuesday.

Up to 50 rescuers were involved in trying to free him.
