Mullins closing on record

Patrick Mullins will head to Fairyhouse hopeful he can move one step closer to making history as he partners City Slicker in the Merry Christmas From Fairyhouse INH Flat Race.

Mullins currently sits on the 70-winner mark for 2012, just two away from the current record number of winners for an amateur rider in a calendar year set by Billy Parkinson all the way back in 1915.

City Slicker would appear to have strong claims of adding to the young jockey's tally having travelled well for a long way on his debut at Naas last month before tiring in the straight to finish fourth behind the highly regarded Ned Buntline.

Champion trainer Willie Mullins has his string in much better form than they were in early November and City Slicker ought to make his presence felt.

The Follow Fairyhouse On Twitter Rated Hurdle has attracted a decent field, with the Mullins-trained Apt Approach bound to have his supporters.

The six-time winner was last seen finishing down the field in the Punchestown Gold Cup in the spring and reverts to the smaller obstacles for the first time in well over three years.

He is rated 127 over timber, but if he can run anywhere near his chase rating of 148 he is going to be very hard to beat.

Gates Of Rome is also back over hurdles for the first time in a long time, while Uncle Tom Cobley is another to consider.

The New Value Hospitality Packages At Fairyhouse Beginners Chase is a wide-open affair and few would begrudge the Tony Martin-trained King Of The Refs a first win, having been places on 11 of his 17 previous starts under Rules.
