A YOUNG man is in serious condition in a Waterford hospital after being attacked and stabbed.

The assault, near St John’s Lane in Waterford city, happened shortly after 7am (Friday) when the man answered a knock on his door.

Both individuals were known to each other and Gardai suspect that the attack may be linked to an ongoing personal dispute.

The victim is in a serious condition in Waterford Regional Hospital in Ardkeen but has already been able to give a brief outline of the incident to Gardai.

He is scheduled to undergo emergency surgery later today (Friday).

However, his condition has stabilised and he is expected to make a full recovery.

The Herald understands the man’s condition is not considered critical.

The man, who is in his late 20s, was attacked by the other individual and sustained a stab wound to his upper leg and lower abdomen.

He also suffered a head injury though this was not inflicted by a knife.

Gardai are trying to determine precisely how the man’s head injury was sustained.

The attacker, who is also in his late 20s, left the scene on foot but was later arrested by Gardai.

He is currently being questioned at Ballybricken Garda Station.

The man detained is understood to be known to gardai.

Gardai are conducting door-to-door inquiries in the area to determine if anyone witnessed the attack or may have information on the circumstances of the assault.

Detectives are also checking CCTV security camera footage to determine the movements of the suspected attacker.
