Woman dies in Galway house fire overnight
GARDAI are investigating the cause of a house fire which claimed the life of a 48-year-old woman.
The woman was alone in the house at the Fana Burca estate in Knocknacarra when the fire broke out.
It is understood she had been enjoying a night out on Saturday and was left home late that night. The fire is believed to have started in the bedroom of her home sometime on Sunday.
Gardai and fire crews were alerted to the incident at around 1.30pm on Sunday afternoon. Three units of the Galway Fire Brigade and an ambulance attended the scene.
The woman's remains were discovered in the bedroom of her home. She was taken to Galway University Hospital where a post-mortem examination was being carried out on her remains today.
Gardai investigating the cause of the fire are examining whether it may have been started by a cigarette.
A spokesperson for the gardai said they were not treating the death as suspicious.
“It appears to be a tragic incident,” she added.
