Over a million illegal cigarettes were seized in Dublin Port on Thursday.

Revenue seized the cigarettes which had been smuggled into Dublin Port, during routine examinations of freight from Rotterdam.

The unstamped cigarettes were discovered thanks to Revenue detector dog, Kelly, and the government customs agency's mobile x-ray scanner.

The seized cigarettes were branded 'Marlboro' and have a retail value of almost €500,000, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of €422,000.

The seizure follows another confiscation earlier in the week which saw 7,800 unstamped cigarettes and 20kgs of tobacco taken from a private residence in Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford.

The products, which had a combined retail value of €16,500 were taken along with a car that was at the scene.

Investigations into the latest seizure are ongoing.
