Memorial for campaigner O'Connell
Ireland's heritage minister has lauded Daniel O'Connell's unshakeable commitment to his principles during a commemoration event.
The political leader campaigned in the first half of the 19th century for Irish Catholics to have the right to become members of the Westminster parliament.
Minister Jimmy Deenihan attended a commemoration at his burial site in Glasnevin Cemetery.
He said: "Daniel O'Connell was distinguished in his age for his dedication to the advancement of society, his recognition of the universality of human rights and his unshakeable commitment to his principles.
"This commitment, allied to the passion and energy he invested in all his work, brought him international acclaim and ensured his lasting legacy. It is fitting that we continue to pay tribute to this legacy."
Others in attendance included the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Oisin Quinn, and members of the O'Connell family.
