A man has died and 11 others were injured after a serious road crash in Co Westmeath.

Gardai said the collision happened on the M6 just after junction 5 eastbound near Kilbeggan.

Five cars were involved in the crash.

The man who died was the driver of one of the cars. He was in his 60s and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger in the car, a woman aged in her 60s, was injured and she was taken to the Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar.

The four drivers and five passengers of the other cars involved were taken to hospitals in Mullingar and Tullamore.

Gardai said another passenger was seriously injured in the crash and was taken by helicopter to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin.

A report has been sent to the local coroner and the scene has been preserved for a forensic examination by Garda.

A stretch of the motorway was closed for about seven hours following the incident. It reopened shortly before 9pm on Sunday night.

The Garda has appealed for anyone who witnessed the crash to contact them at Athlone garda station.
