Man dies and two others injured in serious crash

Gardai said the collision involving a car and a van happened on Thursday shortly after 3pm in Co Louth.

A man has died and two other people have been injured in a crash in Co Louth.

Gardai said they were called to the scene on the R178 Carrickmacross Road shortly after 3pm on Thursday following a collision between a car and a van.

The driver of the car, a man in his 70s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger in the car, a teenage boy, was taken by ambulance to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The driver of the van, a man in his 40s, was taken by air ambulance to Tallaght University Hospital.

His condition is understood to be serious.

He was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

The scene of the crash was preserved to allow gardai to conduct a forensic examination.

They are appealing for any witnesses to contact them.

They are also appealing to those with dam cam footage to make it available to investigators.
