A man and a teenage girl remain in custody after they were arrested on suspicion of murder following an inquiry into a missing man in Portlaoise.

The man, in his 30s, and the teenager were detained as part of the garda investigation into the disappearance of William Delaney, who was reported missing by his family five months ago.

The man is being held at Portlaoise garda station while the girl is at Tullamore garda station.

Gardai and the defence forces were continuing to carry out searches in the Dunamaise and Portlaoise areas on Friday morning.

Mr Delaney, 56, was reported missing on January 31.
