A busy main street in north Dublin was closed off earlier this evening following a "security alert."

The Main Street in Swords and Malahide Road and the surrounding areas were closed off after the alarm was raised shortly after 4.30pm.

A garda spokeswoman said: "Gardaí in Swords have reopened Main Street and Malahide road Swords following an earlier security alert.

"The alarm was raised shortly after 4.30pm and a cursory search was carried out by Gardaí and business owners in the area as a precaution.

"Nothing was located by Gardaí and enquiries are ongoing."
