A BODY was recovered from a van that was winched from the River Lee just off Cork city centre this morning.

Gardaí do not suspect foul play in the grim discovery which was made when St Stephen's Night revellers raised the alarm after seeing a vehicle plunge into the river from Kennedy Quay in Cork shortly after 3am.

Three units of Cork Fire Brigade, supported by Gardaí, attended the scene.

However, tidal conditions and lack of visibility meant it was over an hour before the vehicle could be successfully attached to a winch and then lifted from the water.

A body was discovered inside the vehicle.

The individual was pronounced dead at the scene.

A full post mortem examination is now scheduled to be carried out at Cork University Hospital (CUH).

A file will be prepared for the Cork City Coroner Philip Comyn.
