Beverly Flynn finalises ?1,225,000 settlement with RTE
Beverly Flynn has finalised her settlement with RTE at the High Court over her failed libel case.
The Independent TD has agreed to pay the broadcaster ?1,225,000 by the 17th of August.
Once the settlement is made, the Mayo deputy will drop her constitutional challenge to the law which says a TD cannot be bankrupt.
Beverly Flynn was not in court as the details of her settlement were read out, but her lawyer says he's confident that the Mayo TD will be able to make the required payment by August 17th.
If she fails to pay up, her constitutional challenge will go ahead on October 8th.
Senior counsel for RTE, Cian Ferriter, pointed out to the court that if RTE had not settled, it would have only been entitled to ?300,000, the value of Deputy Flynn's house.
He says, in other words, by agreeing a settlement, RTE has been able to get four times more money than if it hadn't.
Ms Flynn was originally supposed to pay the broadcaster about ?2.2m to cover the cost of her failed libel case.
