Emergency services have responded to a car that went on fire on the M50 this evening.

The car was positioned on the hard shoulder northbound just after Junction 7 for Lucan.

Units from the Dublin Fire Brigade responded to the scene shortly at approximately 6pm.

They warned motorists that visibility on the route was affected due to the smoke from the fire.

"Please watch out for rubberneckers, they may stop suddenly," a spokesperson for the DFB tweeted.

Commuters faced significant delays as the lanes on the motorway were reduced to one for some time.

Gardai have confirmed that all motorway lanes are now open.
