Gilbert didn't just stick to his own name. He is also author of the Frank Merriwell stories, under the pseudonym Burt L. Standish.

2 RL Stine

Lived: 1943-now

Nationality: American

Estimated sales: 100 million to 400 million

Genre: Children's horror

RL Stine began to write at the age of nine when he found a typewriter in his attic at home.

 

3 Janet Dailey

Lived: 1944-2013

Nationality: American

Estimated sales: 300 million

Genre: Romance

Janet's books have been translated into nineteen languages and have sold more than 300 million copies worldwide.

4 Irving Wallace

Lived: 1916-1990

Nationality: American

Estimated sales: 250 million

Genre: Historical

His best-known work is the controversial 1964 novel, The Man. 

 

5 Edgar Wallace

Lived: 1875-1932

Nationality: British

Estimated sales: 300 million

Genre: Thrillers, literary, sci-fi

A prolific writer, Wallace also reported for Reuters. One of his publishers claimed int he early twentieth century that a quarter of all the books read in England were written by him.
