When Frank Sinatra, Liza Minelli and Sammy Davis Junior came to town

They are three of the 20th century's most iconic performers, and this week in 1989, a lucky Dublin crowd got to see them play together on the one stage.

Billed as The Ultimate Event, in May 1989 legendary crooner Frank Sinatra played to 18, 000 adoring fans in Lansdowne Road stadium in Dublin.

He was joined by Liza Milleni and Sammy Davis Junior who played support. Sammy Davis Junior opened the show by playing a string of his classic songs.

He upped the ante when he was joined on stage by members of Stockton's Wing who he had met the night before in a local pub. They danced a jig with him on stage.

Sinatra then took to the stage and performed iconic songs like "Strangers in the Night".

He told the crowd that his father, who had been a boxer, had taken the name of his trainer, Matty O'Brien, and it had led Sinatra to believe he had Irish blood, although he was disappointed to learn that was not the case.

He did, however, let them know that he was at that moment full of Irish whiskey instead.

Despite the persistent rain the crowd sang along to every song. The glamorous trio played for two hours in what the Irish Independent described as ‘a dazzling performance’.
