Young mother arrested on suspicion of trying to travel to Syria with her three kids
A mother-of-three has been arrested as she attempted to travel to Syria with her children.
The woman was detained by police at Birmingham Airport on the suspicion she was planning to “engage in acts of terrorism”.
West Midlands Police said the suspect was from Leicester and was arrested under section five of the UK’s Terrorism Act on suspicion of preparing to travel overseas to engage in terrorist acts.
“Officers are working with partner agencies to ensure their welfare is safeguarded,” they added.
Counter-terrorism officers are now searching the 30-year-old woman's home and another associated address.
Under new Anti-terror legislation, officers now have a maximum of 36 hours to question the suspect before charging or releasing her, or applying to a court for a warrant of further detention.
