The wife of a senior Israeli minister has sparked outrage with a racist tweet about US president Barack Obama.

“Do you know what Obama coffee is? Black and weak”, the tweet by Judy Shalom Nir-Mozes read.

Negative reaction to the tweet was swift, with Mrs Nir-Mozes's followers telling her to take down the offending post and asking "Have you gone mad?"

She deleted the tweet, posting “I apologise, that was a stupid joke somebody told me,” and later joked "I hope I will stay married when my husband land (sic) and hear (sic) about what I did."

But Twitter users had already taken screen shots of the offensive message and quickly outrage spread. Many people on Twitter noted that the offensive tweet came as America grieves over one of the worst race-related hate crimes in decades.

It's not the first time Mrs Nir-Mozes has run into trouble on Twitter.

Vox News reports that in March 2012, she tweeted in response to rocket fire coming from Gaza, "I hope that today they decide to destroy Gaza if they don't stop shooting. Let them suffer as well."
