'Vogue' editor up for UK envoy job

Alex Spillius Washington

Anna Wintour, the British-born editor of American 'Vogue', is under consideration to be the next US ambassador to London, according to reports in the US, after raising more than $500,000 (€382,000) for Barack Obama's re-election campaign.

On the face of it, Ms Wintour, pictured, may not appear a natural candidate.

Her reputation as an aloof and demanding personality has earned her the nickname "Nuclear Wintour" and inspired the waspish fashion queen character played by Meryl Streep in the film 'The Devil Wears Prada'.

But Mr Obama is considering the 63-year-old to safeguard transatlantic relations at the Court of St James, sources with knowledge of the process said.

Her rivals for the London job include Matthew Barzun, the finance chairman of the Obama presidential campaign and a former business technology executive. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
