Body camera captures terrifying moment knife-wielding man lunges at police officers

David Kearns

Two brave police officers were filmed facing down an attacker as he rushed at them with an eight-inch knife.

In footage captured by a camera mounted on their uniforms, Constables Alex Prentice and Debbie Wishart can be seen confronting a man brandishing a large kitchen knife at a property in Northamptonshire.

As the two officers shouted at Lee Vickers to put down the blade, he lunges at them repeatedly before he is disarmed.

In the video, Mr Vickers thrusts the knife towards the officers and shouts at them to “come on, come on then. Me and you now”.

The two police officers were responding to a call about a domestic incident last March and as they approached the property they found Mr Vickers standing outside.

PC Prentice can be heard saying 'all right chap?' before Mr Vickers spins around with the blade clearly visible in his hand.

Following an intense stand off against Mr Vickers, PC Wishart manages to distract him before PC Prentice, using his police baton, knocks the blade from his hand.

He was then arrested for possession of an offensive weapon and the attempted assault.

Mr Vickers was later jailed for three-and-half-years, while officers received a Chief Constable's Commendation and The Boatman Shield at the UK's Police Awards in May.

A statement by Northamptonshire Police said: "They both demonstrated courage, cool resilience and outstanding professionalism in the face of extreme danger."
