Vatican Batman story 'no hoax'

The Vatican says a story about Batman running on one of its websites is legitimate

The Vatican has insisted that one of its main Twitter accounts and the website of its communications office had not been hacked, after concerns were raised following publication of a story about Batman.

The story was from the Catholic News Service, and it featured the headline: "Holy Switcheroo! Batman has grown bitter, more vengeful with the years." It then contained details about the evolution of the Batman comic franchise.

Two Vatican officials said the website of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, on which the story had appeared, had not been hacked, and that the reason for the usual posting was an "internal system failure" due to a non-native English speaker posting the story on the website.

Once a story is posted, it then automatically generates a tweet on the office's Twitter handle.

Earlier this week, the Twitter account of a senior Vatican official was hacked.
