Colorado Springs police found the body of Col Eugene Caughey on Sunday after being called to an incident in which a man was feared to have taken his own life. Post-mortem tests are taking place.

The 46-year-old had been vice commander of the 50th Space Wing at Schriever Air Force Base outside Colorado Springs, which operates key military satellite systems.

Col Caughey was accused of raping a woman in late 2014 or early 2015. He was also charged with adultery, indecent filming or photography, dereliction of duty and conduct unbecoming an officer.

His court-martial had been scheduled for October 17.
