Paez Vilaro was a self-trained painter, sculptor, screenwriter, musician and architect who championed Afro-Uruguayan Candombe music and dance, created colourful murals in dozens of cities around the world and built a huge "living sculpture" that became an iconic 50-room hotel. He was 90.

Paez Vilaro's son Carlitos said he died on Monday at home in Casapueblo, the sprawling structure outside Punta del Este that doubled as a museum and cultural centre.

He said his father worked until his dying day, and "was lucid, impeccable, a model for everyone".

The artist's son was among 16 survivors from a Uruguayan rugby team whose plane crashed in the Andes in 1972.
