Two charged over Barbados shootings

The couple are on a three-month P&O cruise around the Caribbean and South America on board the Adonia

Two men have been charged in connection with the shooting of a British couple on holiday in Barbados, local police said.

Cruise passengers Ann Prior, 59, and her husband Philip, 72, were blasted in front of horrified fellow tourists during a robbery on the Caribbean island on Sunday.

Police expect the two suspects to be brought before a court in the next 24 hours.

Inspector David Welch, of Royal Barbados Police, said: "Two persons have been charged. One person was charged with serious bodily harm to two visitors. He has, in addition, been charged with another man, with the offence of robbery."

Mr Prior was hit on his left side and his wife, whose handbag was stolen, was shot in her right thigh as they visited the capital, Bridgetown.

Shocked passers-by were pictured rushing to give first aid in the wake of the shooting.

The Priors, believed to be from Woodbridge, Suffolk, were taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment.

They are understood to have left the island in "good spirits".

The attack came towards the end of their three-month P&O cruise around the Caribbean and South America on board the Adonia, which left Southampton on January 8.

The vessel is due to arrive back in the UK on April 3.
