Australia's prime minister Tony Abbott has survived an internal government challenge to his leadership.

Chief whip Philip Ruddock said a meeting of MPs in the ruling conservative Liberal Party voted to reject a motion that called for a ballot for the party leadership and deputy by 61 votes to 39.

The challenge was initiated by disgruntled MPs halfway through Mr Abbott's first three-year-term in office.
