Thief checks out with €173,000 Rembrandt

Nick Allen in Los Angeles

A Rembrandt drawing, valued at more than $250,000 (€172,990), has been stolen from a Los Angeles hotel during what police called a well-planned robbery.

The pen and ink drawing called 'The Judgment' was on display as part of an exhibition in the lobby of the Ritz-Carlton hotel.

The five-star hotel was hosting a private exhibition which was offering artworks for sale to possible buyers.

A curator was distracted by another person during which time the thief snatched the drawing from the wall and escaped undetected.

Steve Whitmore, a spokesman for Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, said: "We believe this was a well thought out and a well-planned theft."

Police are currently reviewing security camera footage.

Rembrandt made the drawing using a quill pen and black ink in 1655. It is one of around 700 drawings attributed to the artist. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
