The Bastille Day festival atmosphere in the seaside resort was shattered by a truck ploughing through the crowd of 30,000 heading home. The death toll from the latest terrorist atrocity to be visited upon France rose to 84 yesterday.

Of the further 202 people injured, 25 are on life support and 52 in a critical condition.

A Galway man who had emigrated from Ireland and is living abroad is in a critical condition in hospital following the attack.

At least 10 of the dead and 50 of the injured are children who had gathered with their families to watch the fireworks along the Promenade des Anglais on the seafront of the French Riviera.

Officials fear the death toll will rise.
