Hunter Treschl and his cousin were swimming in the waves off the beach at Oak Island when he felt something bump into his left calf.

The boy thought it was a big fish of some kind, so he moved away.

It was then that the shark bit the 16-year-old's left arm off above the elbow.

In a videotaped interview released by the hospital that is treating him, Hunter said his cousin helped him to make it back onto the beach before others came running to his aid.

Despite losing his dominant hand in Sunday's attack, Hunter said he is going to try to fight and live a normal life.
