Fears are growing for a teenage boy who vanished after jumping into the water beneath a dam to help rescue a trapped girl.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources said Jason Moran, 17, was one of five youngsters swimming in the Big Blue River when 16-year-old Sarah Mclevish was swept over the Edinburgh dam and became trapped.

Jason and three other boys tried to rescue Sarah but were overcome by the force of the water, which was at flood stage.

Sarah and another youngster, Michale Chadbourne,16, are in a critical condition at an Indianapolis hospital.

The search for Jason, which was halted last night, resumed today.
