Sports Direct baby: Police launch investigation into 'unusual' birth
Police are investigating after a baby was born in what has been described as "unusual circumstances" at a Sports Direct retail warehouse on New Year's Day.
Ambulance services were called to the premises in Shirebrook, Derbyshire on Wednesday evening and alerted police after arriving on the scene.
The baby boy, who is said to be seriously ill but stable, was admitted to a neonatal unit.
Derbyshire Police said the baby's mother, who is believed to be of eastern European origin, was also taken to hospital for treatment.
Officers did not confirm local media reports that staff had called paramedics after finding the baby in a ladies toilet.
A spokesperson for Sports Direct declined to comment because of the police investigation and would not confirm if the mother was an employee, the BBC said.
In a statement, Derbyshire Constabulary said: "Police were called by the ambulance service at around 11.15 pm on January 1 to reports of the birth of a baby in unusual circumstances at a business premises in Shirebrook.
"The baby was taken to a neo-natal unit, where he remains. Officers are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the birth."
