Soldiers' wives top Christmas charts

A choir of wives of soldiers serving in Afghanistan topped the British singles charts yesterday, beating 'X Factor' winners Little Mix to the Christmas number one spot.

'Wherever You Are' by Military Wives sold 556,000 copies, the Official Charts Company said, with all proceeds from the single going to The Royal British Legion and the Soldiers, Sailors Airmen and Families Association.

Gibson divorces spouse of 31 years

A judge has approved a divorce settlement between actor Mel Gibson and his estranged wife Robyn, ending their 31 years of marriage.

Robyn Gibson will return to using her maiden name, Robyn Denise Moore, but other details of the divorce were kept confidential. The settlement becomes effective on January 9.

New youngest to scale mountains

A California teenager has become the youngest person to successfully climb to the summit of the seven tallest mountains on Earth's seven continents.

Jordan Romero (15) yesterday reached the top of Mt Vinson Massif in Antarctica to beat the previous record held by 16-year-old British climber George Atkinson. At 10, Jordan climbed Mt Kilimanjaro in Africa, and at 13 he climbed Mt Everest.

De Niro and wife welcome baby girl

Actor Robert De Niro and his wife Grace Hightower have become the proud parents of a baby girl born via a surrogate, the actor's spokesman confirmed.

The child is the second for Mr De Niro (68) and Ms Hightower (56). She is named Helen Grace Hightower De Niro.

Mum threw out corpse in rubbish

A mother has been arrested after allegedly admitting to police she threw her daughter's body out with the rubbish.

India Parker (35) of Cleveland, Ohio, is facing a charge of abuse of a corpse following the disappearance of the body of her daughter, Kaliyah (10) who died when a bookcase fell on her.

Mothers are worst present offenders

Britons received £2.4bn (€2.87bn) worth of unwanted Christmas presents this year, a new survey suggests.

One in five people said mothers were the worst culprits for giving inappropriate gifts, followed by mothers-in-law (18pc) and aunts (16pc).

Man shot in pub in Manchester

The victim, named by sources as 23-year-old Mark Short, was gunned down in the Cotton Tree pub in Market Street, Droylsden, Greater Manchester shortly before 11.50pm yesterday.Three other men, believed to be related to Mr Short, were also injured and are being treated in hospital.

Giant royal family on Southbank

The largest ever photograph of the Royal Family has been displayed on a prominent South Bank building in celebration of the Queen?s Diamond Jubilee.Sea Containers, by Blackfriars Bridge, was enrobed in the giant picture measuring 100m by 70m and weighing in at nearly two tons. The image was erected by a team of eight people over 45 hours. It is due to remain in place until July.

Oldest woman defeats Everest again

Watanabe reached the summit from the Tibetan side on 19 May, at the age of 73 years and 180 days. That day, more than 200 climbers were aiming for the summit on the busier southern route in Nepal. Four died, apparently from altitude sickness and exhaustion, on one of the deadliest days on the mountain.
