Smoker puffs to 100

A woman has reached her 100th birthday despite smoking half a million cigarettes during her life.

Dorothy Howe took her first drag aged 16 and has puffed her way through 15 every day since, which means she has smoked about 460,000 cigarettes over the last 84 years. Dorothy, of Saltdean, East Sussex, said: "I put my health down to whisky and cigarettes."

GUN VIOLENCE ON RISE

Gun violence in teen-friendly films has increased considerably in recent decades, to the point that it sometimes exceeds gun violence in even adult movies, according to a US study.

The Annenberg Public Policy Centre and Ohio State University examined gun violence in top-grossing movies. Researchers found such action in PG-13-rated films has more than tripled since 1985.

PARROTS NEED HOMES

A US parrot shelter manager has appealed for help after it emerged the home may have to close its doors.

The Rhode Island commercial building that homes the Birdhouse and Rescue centre is set for demolition because the owner plans to redevelop the area. Bird boss Steve Lazicki said the 80 strays in his care must be out by December 30.

SIX DIE IN JAIL FIGHT

Six inmates have died in a prison fight in the city of Reynosa in northern Mexico, authorities said.

Tamaulipas state said three inmates had admitted stabbing the victims to death with makeshift knives at the jail across the border from McAllen, Texas. The suspects told investigators killings were over old grudges.

SUDAN POLIO JABS FAIL

Efforts to vaccinate 165,000 children against polio in Sudan's South Kordofan and Blue Nile states have failed, according to the UN.

UN humanitarian boss John Ging said arrangements for the vaccination campaign had been agreed between the government and SPLM-North, but the rebel group blocked the vaccination programme.

Jennifer Lawrence will not only star in the upcoming film adaptation of Jeanette Walls' 2005 best-selling memoir 'The Glass Castle', the project will also mark her first time as a producer.

"I don't know if I will be any good, but I'm trying it," Lawrence said. "So far I am not sure if I am because I am very instinctual, but not very verbal. But producing is something that I have really wanted to do."
