The parents of a teenager who fatally shot a classmate at a US school have apologised for their son's actions.
In a letter delivered to Portland television station KPTV, Michael Padgett says he and his ex-wife Kristina are "horrified and distraught" by the violence committed by their son, Jared, in Oregon.
They say they never promoted hatred, and they taught their children compassion, forgiveness, patience and love in Jesus Christ.
Police say 15-year-old freshman Jared Padgett shot 14-year-old Emilio Hoffman at Reynolds High School in Troutdale, near Portland, before killing himself.
Padgett's parents apologised to Emilio's family, the teacher who was grazed by a bullet, and the entire community.
