Relatives of Nelson Mandela have visited the former South African president in hospital where he is being treated for a lung infection.

Zenani Dlamini, one of Mr Mandela's daughters, was among those visiting the 94-year-old anti-apartheid leader today, his eighth day in a Pretoria hospital.

President Jacob Zuma said on Thursday that Mr Mandela was continuing to improve but remains in a serious condition.

Mr Mandela spent 27 years in prison during white racist rule. He was freed in 1990 and became South Africa's first black president in elections in 1994.
