Rare whisky is sold for £44,000

A rare bottle of whisky has sold for £44,000 (€52,000) -- around £1,700 a nip. The 1955 bottle of Glenfiddich Janet Sheed Roberts Reserve was sold at auction in London to an anonymous bidder over the weekend.

The previous world record for a single malt was just under £30,000.

Heart surgery for Japan's emperor

Japanese Emperor Akihito will undergo heart bypass surgery this week after a detailed examination found a heart problem had worsened.

Emperor Akihito (78) underwent an angiogram over the weekend, which showed that blood vessels had narrowed over the past year.

Mandela to appear on bank notes

Nelson Mandela's face will feature on all South Africa's bank notes to honour the former president's role in fighting apartheid.

The announcement by President Jacob Zuma coincides with the 22nd anniversary of Mr Mandela's release from prison after serving 27 years for his opposition to white-only rule.

Mills wins ski race for British team

Heather Mills yesterday won an Austrian ski race, just days after giving evidence to the British inquiry into press standards.

The former wife of Paul McCartney took first place at the Austria Cup Super G Ski Speed Race at Innerkrems, competing for the British disabled ski team. Mills (44), who is hoping to compete in the 2014 Paralympics, competed despite suffering a fractured shoulder and broken thumb.

Mob beats kidnap gang to death

A mob in central Mexico has beaten three suspected kidnappers to death. Mexico state prosecutor Alfredo Castillo said the mob also set two of the men on fire.

Mr Castillo said that 23 people in San Mateo Hitzilzingo had been detained after 300 locals took the three men out of the town's police station and began beating them. The men had tried to kidnap a teenage boy.

Gaddafi's son to be moved to Tripoli

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of toppled Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, will be moved to a Tripoli prison within two months and then face trial, the chairman of Libya's National Transitional Council said yesterday.

Authorities are completing the construction of a prison in Tripoli to house Mr Gaddafi, who was captured three months ago.

Man shot in pub in Manchester

The victim, named by sources as 23-year-old Mark Short, was gunned down in the Cotton Tree pub in Market Street, Droylsden, Greater Manchester shortly before 11.50pm yesterday.Three other men, believed to be related to Mr Short, were also injured and are being treated in hospital.

Giant royal family on Southbank

The largest ever photograph of the Royal Family has been displayed on a prominent South Bank building in celebration of the Queen?s Diamond Jubilee.Sea Containers, by Blackfriars Bridge, was enrobed in the giant picture measuring 100m by 70m and weighing in at nearly two tons. The image was erected by a team of eight people over 45 hours. It is due to remain in place until July.

Oldest woman defeats Everest again

Watanabe reached the summit from the Tibetan side on 19 May, at the age of 73 years and 180 days. That day, more than 200 climbers were aiming for the summit on the busier southern route in Nepal. Four died, apparently from altitude sickness and exhaustion, on one of the deadliest days on the mountain.
