Police smash €300m drugs gang

Australian police arrested 34 people and seized 6,000 cannabis plants in the biggest series of drug raids in the history of Victoria state. Police said the operation had smashed a cartel that raked in AU$400m (€291m).

The gang producing the cannabis had connections to New Zealand and Vietnam and had been operating for two years.

Canadian court to rule on polygamy

A lawyer for British Columbia's government warned a judge that declaring polygamy a protected religious practice would make Canada the only Western country to allow multiple marriages.

The British Columbia Supreme Court is examining whether banning polygamy violates Canada's version of the bill of rights in a case that will focus on the small polygamous community of Bountiful.

1,000 rats seeking a loving home

Around a thousand rats are awaiting adoption in California after being rescued from a house featured on a reality TV show.

The previous owner's daughter had brought home a pregnant rat and the litter began multiplying and tearing the house apart. Volunteers moved the rats into a pet shop in San Jose which agreed to temporarily house them.

Cliff still proves a hot date at 70

CLIFF Richard is proving to be a hotter date than JLS, Justin Bieber and Michael Buble -- as he outsells them in the calendar charts.

The pop veteran (70), who stripped to the waist for one of the shots, has the biggest-selling male celebrity calendar and has sold more than 1.5 million calendars over the years.

Pizzeria thieves flee with dough

THIEVES in New York held up the owners of a pizzeria and then fled with a bag full of dough, a court heard.

Two thieves followed the owners of 'Brothers Pizzeria' on Staten Island and after donning masks, pointed guns and demanded a bag they believed held the day's proceeds.

'More sex' plea by minister

A SMALL slip of the tongue had Canada's industry minister pleading for "more Canadian sex stories", although he quickly insisted he was talking about success.

"We need more Canadian sex stories," Tony Clement said during a speech on the government's digital strategy.

Man shot in pub in Manchester

The victim, named by sources as 23-year-old Mark Short, was gunned down in the Cotton Tree pub in Market Street, Droylsden, Greater Manchester shortly before 11.50pm yesterday.Three other men, believed to be related to Mr Short, were also injured and are being treated in hospital.

Giant royal family on Southbank

The largest ever photograph of the Royal Family has been displayed on a prominent South Bank building in celebration of the Queen?s Diamond Jubilee.Sea Containers, by Blackfriars Bridge, was enrobed in the giant picture measuring 100m by 70m and weighing in at nearly two tons. The image was erected by a team of eight people over 45 hours. It is due to remain in place until July.

Oldest woman defeats Everest again

Watanabe reached the summit from the Tibetan side on 19 May, at the age of 73 years and 180 days. That day, more than 200 climbers were aiming for the summit on the busier southern route in Nepal. Four died, apparently from altitude sickness and exhaustion, on one of the deadliest days on the mountain.
