The police chief of the city of Maringa Sergio Barroso says officers recovered the lion at a breeding farm 320 miles from the sanctuary where nine-year-old Rawell was stolen.

Mr Barroso says they searched there because of a dispute between the small ranch's owner and the sanctuary.

He told radio station BandNews that the rancher previously owned the lion and contends he still does.

Mr Barroso says a caretaker was detained when the lion was found and the rancher has been summoned to appear before authorities.

The 660-pound lion was not harmed and will be staying in the city of Maringa until the matter is cleared up.
