Patti Page dies at 85

Singer Patti Page, who made 'Tennessee Waltz' the third bestselling recording ever, has died in Encinitas, California, at the age of 85.

Page, who was the top-selling female singer in history with more than 100 million record sales, created a distinctive sound in 1947 by overdubbing her own voice when she did not have enough money to hire back-up singers for the single 'Confess'. She had 24 records in the top 10, including four that reached No 1.

Plane joyriders killed

Three teenagers who took a small airplane on a joyride in Alabama, US, were killed when they crashed into a tree.

Walker County sheriff's chief deputy James Painter said: "I think they were just looking for a thrill, and they had their last one."

Seal found in field

An adventurous seal has been found in a flooded field in Cambridgeshire, England, after it swam 50 miles from the sea.

It is believed the seal swam up the Great River Ouse and glided into a nature reserve at St Ives through floodwater.

Gay Mass scrapped

Special Masses for gay Catholics at a London church are to be scrapped.

Archbishop of Westminster Vincent Nichols, one of the loudest voices opposing plans to allow same-sex marriages, said the Masses were not in line with the church's central teaching on sexuality.

Gun move backfires

A New York newspaper that sparked controversy after publishing the names and addresses of local gun permit owners has now hired armed guards in an apparent response to threats.

The 'Journal News' caused uproar on December 23 when it listed thousands of pistol permit holders on its website.

Vomiting bug cases up

More than 1.1 million people in Britain have succumbed to the winter vomiting disease so far this season, figures reveal.

British Health Protection Agency data showed there have been 3,877 laboratory-confirmed cases of norovirus in Britain this winter, 72pc higher than at the same point the previous year.

Bus crash terror

Survivors of a deadly bus crash on an Oregon highway endured the harrowing task of retrieving passports from the scene so they could finish their journey to Canada.

Police escorted survivors to collect their property, strewn across a hillside as their bus slid from the icy road. The crash killed nine people and injured at least 38.
