Pakistan jets hit militant hideouts

Fighter jets pounded militant positions in north-west Pakistan overnight following a Taliban bombing campaign against security forces there, officials and residents said today.

A Pakistani military official said 25 militants were killed in the strikes.

But at least two residents reached by telephone in North Waziristan said civilians were among the dead.

They said some people slept in the open amid fears that their homes might be hit.

A bomb planted in a vehicle killed 26 troops in the north-western frontier region on Sunday, while a suicide bomber killed 13 people, including eight security personnel, in Rawalpindi yesterday.
