Paedophile never saw Madeleine in 'real life'

Monday June 15 2009

A convicted British paedophile insisted last night he had never seen missing Madeleine McCann other than on posters and on television.

Raymond Hewlett, who lived in Ireland for a period during the 1990s, said: "I'd take a lie-detector test. The only time I've seen Madeleine McCann is on missing posters. And I saw her on TV in a bar once."

Final attempts by detectives working for the McCann family to interview Mr Hewlett failed on Wednesday last week.

Retired UK policemen Dave Edgar and Arthur Cowley flew to Germany the day before, hoping to speak to Mr Hewlett, but negotiations broke down. "I have been attempting to speak with Raymond Hewlett to eliminate him from our investigation. He is not a suspect but I was keen to interview him,'' said Mr Edgar.

Hewlett (64) a former soldier, has been treated for throat cancer. He was jailed several times in the UK for sexually assaulting young girls.
