One person has died and two people were injured when a plane crashed at Aspen airport, police in Colorado have confirmed.

Thomas Wright, a dispatcher with the Pitkin County Sheriff's Office, says three people were aboard the plane on Saturday.

As well as the fatality, he said that one person was severely injured and another suffered non-serious injuries.

Aspen Valley Hospital spokeswoman Ginny Dyche says the facility admitted two patients involved in the crash.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Allen Kenitzer said the plane was headed from Tucson, Arizona, and crashed upon landing.

Aspen is located in the Rocky Mountains about 100 miles south-west of Denver.
