A woman is facing the death penalty after she allegedly locked her 10-year-old cousin in a plastic box as punishment for stealing an ice-pop.

Sammantha Lucille Rebecca Allen (28) is facing trial later this week for the death of Ame Deal in 2011.

According to Fox News, Allen and her husband, John Michael, forced Ame to get into the plastic box as punishment and allegedly fell asleep before letting the girl out of the box and she subsequently died overnight.

Ame's mum had left the family after alleged abuse and moved to Kansas without her young daughter.

Investigators claim that Ame suffered from a number of abusive incidents and was forced to eat dog feces as well as hot sauce.

It's also alleged that the 10-year-old was unhealthily thin and was often kicked and beaten.

Allen and her husband are now facing charges of child abuse and murder charges.
