Donald Trump Jr has been condemned for comparing Syrian refugees to a bowl of poisoned Skittles.
Senior officials described the comment as "disgusting".
Politicians and celebrities rounded on the 38-year-old son of the Republican presidential nominee after he posted on Twitter a picture of the sweets along with the comment: "If I had a bowl of Skittles and I told you just three would kill you, would you take a handful? That's our Syrian refugee problem."
Wrigley Americas, Skittles' parent company, immediately distanced itself from the tweet. "Skittles are candy. Refugees are people," said Denise Young, the vice-president of corporate affairs. "We don't feel this is an appropriate analogy."
The British photographer who took the image of the tweet further embarrassed Trump by revealing he is a former refugee himself. David Kittos, from Guildford in England, was forced to leave his home in Cyprus in 1974 when it was occupied by Turkey.
"I don't support Trump's politics and I would never take his money to use it," he said. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
