A woman who was left heartbroken after Hillary Clinton lost the US election to Donald Trump got the surprise of her life when she met Clinton on a hike.

New York mum, Margot Gerster was hiking with her daughters in Chappaqua when she bumped into Hillary and Bill Clinton.

"I've been feeling so heartbroken since yesterday's election and decided what better way to relax than take my girls hiking.

"As we were leaving, I heard a bit of rustling coming towards me and as I stepped into the clearing there she was, Hillary Clinton and Bill with their dogs doing exactly the same thing as I was."

Ms Gerster said she got to hug and talk to Clinton saying her "proudest moment as a mum" was when she brought her daughters to vote.

"She hugged me and thanked me and we exchanged some sweet pleasantries and then I let them continue their walk."

Ms Gerster said she will continue to support Clinton.

"Now, I'm not one for signs but I think I'll definitely take this one. So proud," she added
