A US teen was left terrified after she stumbled across a body - while chasing a yellow mouse in an augmented reality phone app.

Shayla Wiggins told the New York Daily News that she had seen the character Pikachu close to her Wyoming home in the app and decided to try and find it.

The app game, Pokémon Go,  involves users walking around their neighbourhoods to collect the different kinds of virtual Pokemon.

Shayla (19) was on the hunt for Pikachu when she noticed a dark shape in the water.

She approached the 'shape' before realising it was a man dressed in a jeans and t-shirt, lying face down in the water.

“I cried and started shaking and called 911 right away,” Shayla told the website.

Police are investigating the death which they believe to be accidental.

The teen has since expressed her sympathy for the deceased's family and friends.
